East Hartford Middle School has a new newspaper featuring stories, interviews, opinion pieces and art – all by students. The EHMS Newspaper Club has put out two issues of The Falcon Flyer so far this school year.

Student writers cover school activities, clubs and events. They also interview EHMS staff members and craft opinion pieces.

“I just wanted to write about stuff and life,” said 6th grade writer Grace Louis, who interviewed one of the school’s custodians for the second issue of The Falcon Flyer.

The Newspaper Club also welcomes student artists, cartoonists and photographers.

“I take a lot of pictures any way,” said 8th grade photographer Christian Roldan. “So now I could take this hobby of my own and share. It’s something cool to do.”

English Teacher Brian Vignati started the club this year. He and his co-advisors English Teacher Kim Yrayta and Special Education Teacher Shannon Jones help students organize their ideas and plan their pieces. They also serve as newspaper editors.

Once each issue is finalized, the club works together to print and distribute copies around the school.

Students are encouraged to join the club and make their voices heard.
8th grade artist Aurora “Ayce” Wilkerson said, “When I figured out that you could do newspaper, I was like, ‘Ok, this is going to go out to the whole school and I would have a say and be a part of it.’”
